Preamble

"This issue of the bulletin looks rather different. The reports from one of our contributing laboratories seem to have become lost in the recent postal dispute - at least we presume they have, because they have not arrived here even though publication has been held over until 22 August. So there are no virus reports in this issue and no commentary on them. We have arranged with the laboratory for a copy of the reports to be send in, and Bulletin 17 will contain virus data for two reporting periods.
By way of consolation we offer:-"

Extension of the Bulletin
"For many years now States and Territories Health authorities have sent weekly summaries of notifications of communicable disease to the Department of Health where they have been collated and circulated to interested groups. From now on these summaries will be merged. The statistics for notifiable disease will be presented for fortnightly periods once we can produce them more up-to-date than has been possible for this issue of the Bulletin.

Suggestions for a more appropriate name for the Bulletin would be welcome."
