Since the re-introduction of notification of measles in 1986, over 15,000 cases of measles have been reported in Australia. In response to the high incidence of measles, the National Health and Medical Research Council developed the report Measles: Guidelines for the Control of Outbreaks in Australia in 1996. Australia has now moved from the ‘outbreak prevention’ to the ‘elimination’ phase to arrest the transmission of measles. To facilitate the move to the ‘elimination’ phase, it has been necessary to revise the existing guidelines.
